Local Labour Party condemns Gaza violence, as Rennie remains silent on the issue

Thomas Docherty, Chairman of the Dunfermline & West Fife Labour Party has backed Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s demand for an immediate ceasefire in the Palestian territory of Gaza.  Mr Docherty was speaking after being contacted by a number of West Fife residents in recent days who were concerned by the latest eruption of violence.  At the same time Labour is calling on Lib Dem MP Willie Rennie to clarify his position after a week of silence from the politician whose trip to the Middle East last year was part funded by the Israeli Government.

Thomas commented; “Like I am sure every other West Fifer, I have been sickened the images on our television screens of the violence in the Palestinian territory.  I have been contacted by a number of local residents in recent days who were have been similarly outraged by Israel’s indiscriminate attacks on the civilian population.  It is therefore astonishing that there has been no word from Willie Rennie MP on this matter.  He made great play in his glossy electioneering leaflets last year about his “fact finding trip” to Israel & Palestine – a trip that was paid for in part by the Israeli Government.  Mr Rennie needs to publicly condemn the action of his hosts and furthermore make it clear that he will not take hospitality again from the current regime.”
